Cardiorespiratory fitness and classification of risk of cardiovascular disease mortality.
BACKGROUND Cardiorespiratory fitness (fitness) is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. However, the extent to which fitness improves risk classification when added to traditional risk factors is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS Fitness was measured by the Balke protocol in 66 371 subjects without prior CVD enrolled in the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study between 1970 and 2006; ...

Objectives To determine the association between fitness and lifetime risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Background: Higher levels of traditional risk factors are associated with marked differences in lifetime risks for CVD. However, data are sparse regarding the association between fitness and the lifetime risk for CVD. Methods: We followed 11,049 men who underwent clinical examination at t...
متن کاملCardiorespiratory fitness, all-cause mortality, and risk of cardiovascular disease in Trinidadian men--the St James survey.
BACKGROUND This study examined whether cardiorespiratory fitness is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, and all-cause mortality in a low- to middle-income Trinidadian community of African, South Asian Indian, and European origin. Those of Indian descent have a distinctively high rate of myocardial infarction. METHODS The St James Study is a prospective total commu...
متن کاملCardiorespiratory fitness and mortality in diabetic men with and without cardiovascular disease.
We assessed joint associations of cardiorespiratory fitness and diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), or both with all-cause mortality. High-fitness eliminated mortality risk in diabetes (P<0.001) and halved risk of death in diabetes/CVD (P<0.001). Fitness was a potent effect modifier in the association of diabetes and CVD to mortality.
متن کاملThe association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiovascular risk in adolescents.
OBJECTIVE Maximum oxygen uptake is emerging as the measure of preference for expressing cardiorespiratory fitness for the purposes of surveys of physical activity, due to its greater objectivity and lower propensity to errors. Studies indicate that this measure is better correlated with cardiovascular diseases. This paper proposes to relate cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents with their ...
